Men in composing room during observance; men in color press during observation.; Supplementary material reads: "Santley. Hearst sidebar -- Observance. For 15 minutes yesterday, production was suspended as the Los Angeles Examiner's 1700 employees paused in memory of the late William Randolph Hearst. The memorial observance began at 11 a.m., the hour of Mr. Hearst's funeral in San Francisco. Giant presses were silent. Linotype machines clicked to a halt. The clatter of typewriters ceased. And the usually busy telephones were stilled. Then, at 11:15 a.m., activity began once more, and the roar of the presses again shook the building as the Examiner staff went back to the job to which Mr. Hearst had dedicated his life".
