Abstract | The aim of this research is to examine the experiences of fathers of children with disabilities as they engage in fathering occupations. Current research on fathers of children with disabilities focuses on stress, lacking an examination of what fathers are doing with their children and why they are doing it. This ethnographic study employs narrative phenomenology as both a theoretical lens and a research methodology, employing interviews and observations of five fathers who have a child with a disability. Major themes that emerged in father’s stories included descriptions of: (a) the construction of disability narratives, (b) transitions that influence the enactment of fatherhood, (c) the power of redemptive narratives, (d) and the experience of fathering occupations. Fathers’ communication with their children in the car is used to explore places of fathering occupations. Men’s investments in fathering occupations are explored through examination of a father feeding his daughter with a disability. Discussion includes implications for fathering research, the study of occupations, and family centered care. |
