Abstract | Universities and colleges show increasing interest in internationalization due to accelerated interrelationships caused by the processes of globalization. With the business sector at the forefront of engagement in globalization, higher education institutions often mirror patterns found in the business sector rather than engaging in internationalization in ways that are aligned with their own values. As such, international partnerships in higher education also typically emulate the business sector through the creation of collaborations that focus on income generation (Altbach & Knight, 2007; Armstrong, 2007; Slaughter & Leslie, 1997) and prestige (Armstrong, 2007; Chan, 2004). Like partnerships in the business sector where competition produces inequitable relationships and cultural diversity is diminished through homogeneity, international partnerships in higher education often create similar conditions. ❧ This study examined the SINO-US Strategic Alliance (SUSTAIN), a unique international partnership in higher education that consciously strives to engage differently than typical partnerships in higher education. Using the business literature as a starting point, this study examined the nature and goals of this partnership, with particular attention to its organization as a social venture in higher education. The findings of this study examine SUSTAIN’s distinctive characteristics and the values of its participants, thereby identifying attributes associated with social ventures in higher education. |
