Abstract | This paper argues that the New York Times coverage of the Second Battle of Fallujah in late 2004 and early 2005 virtually ignored evidence of massive civilian casualties. Via a close reading of all Times articles published on the offensive at the time, and interviews with journalists involved in the coverage, the paper explores how and why Times journalists in Iraq may have treated the actions of the US occupiers differently than those of the “insurgents” they were fighting in Fallujah. The appendix also includes interviews with veteran foreign correspondents not directly involved in the coverage. |
