| Abstract | Women educational leaders struggle to achieve and sustain success in senior positions due to their attempts to manage societal expectations for balancing work and family. Societal expectations of being the primary caregivers result in working women attempting to navigate multiple professional and personal roles. Those who have attained the highest levels of leadership are tasked with being effective leaders in their workplace while at the same time successfully managing a home life and family. ❧ The purpose of this study is to determine how women leaders in education successfully balance work and family roles. While there is no “right way” to negotiate work-life balance, the study’s aim is to identify strategies that successful women leaders employ to effectively balance their work and family domains. This study also reveals challenges that women may face in achieving and sustaining a student affairs leadership position, along with support systems that address these challenges. ❧ Four women Vice Presidents for Student Affairs, or senior student affairs officers (SSAOs), participated in this qualitative case study. Data collection occurred via a series of in-person and telephone interviews, interviews with colleagues referred by the participants, office environmental scans, examination of resumes and institutional leave policies, and activity log entries over a five-week period. The study’s results are of interest both to aspiring and current women leaders as they aim to successfully integrate their work and family roles, as well as to policymakers who desire to retain these effective leaders. |
