| Abstract | China's post-80's generation is the group of Chinese youth who live in the urban areas of China and share specific generational characteristics. Born in the 1980s, the members of this generation have begun to play crucial roles in the society and the political system. Studies on their political identity and political participation have become both urgent and significant. This study is trying to answer questions about how this generation defines themselves, whether there is a favorable attitude toward democracy among this generation and, if so, to what extent and in what forms that the post-80's generation participates in the political activities. Using national survey data collected in China in 2010 and interview data collected in 2009, in addition to the World Value Survey data and the Development on Beijing Youth survey data, this study tries to incorporate both the quantitative and qualitative method to explore the political features of the Chinese post-80's generation. The study concludes that there is a high level of nationalism among this generation. The political ideological education and confidence in the Chinese Central Government has contributed to this popular nationalism. Plotted on the left-right political spectrum, Chinese post-80's generation members are oriented to the right on the political system while oriented to the left on the economic issues. The study also finds a favorable attitude exists toward democracy among this generation. Furthermore, the study points out that the Chinese post-80's generation has great interests in politics and is willing to participate in public affairs. However, the survey data indicate this generation has a low level of electoral participation experiences. Their major form of political participation is articulating their interests on the Internet. |
