| Abstract | This study looked at how the LGBT resource centers and the athletic departments within the institutions that compose the Pacific 12 conference work together to address the needs of LGBT student athletes. The study considers past literature related to LGBT athletes and the perceptions of LGBT athletes by heterosexual individuals and personal accounts of LGBT athletes. This study draws from this past research to examine how the administration at various universities implemented best policies and practices for LGBT athletes. The thesis findings include five major themes that emerged from the research related to: 1) diversity programming, 2) ally training, 3) inclusive language, 4) a use of senior exit surveys, and 5) the professional working relationships between athletic programs and LGBT centers. This thesis concludes with implications for future research and policy. |
