CONVENTION high degree of unity was obviously present as each preacher expressed his concern for continued emphasis on living a holy life in the unholy times, Presiding Bishop Patterson Addressing UNAC-5 "For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness."-I Thessalonians 4:7 The theme for the 1982 United National Auxiliaries Convention, held July 5-11, in San Francisco, California was: THE CALL TO HOLINESS. While there , were varying sermon topics the underlying thought of each major message was "holiness." A The sermon content tended to focus on holiness from two perspectives. One naturally addressed the need for individual persons to have a holy lifestyle The other perspective sought to warn against measuring success b\ standards that neglected the importance of holiness. One or both of these perspectives were provided in the evening services by quite an outstanding line-up of preachers. On Civic Night, the keynote speaker, Mrs. Elizabeth Hood, Wayne State University professor and wife of councilman Rev. From Tuesday to Friday, a Christian educational program was sponsored which featured a wide variety of specialized classes for all levels and age groups. These morning training sessions were taught by a team of top notch teachers, representing some of the best from around the country. One of the more popular classes was "Pentecostalism" taught by Bishop Ithiel Clemmons. What makes this class so interesting is that it provides a history of pentecostalism that the average laymen doesn't have. Bishop Clemmons, an excellent, reputable scholar, traces the historical roots of the Pentecostal movement. He seeks to help the saints see and understand the COGIC in the context of the wider pentecostal community. Another featured class was a seminar on church growth. Geared more toward pastors, this class provided Biblical insights and pnnciples that lead to thriving, growing congregations. Leading the CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 Thursday: Bishop F. E. Perry-Jurisdictional Bishop, Ohio South Friday: Bishop J. 0. Patterson-Presiding Bishop, COGIC International Saturday: Dr Roy L. H. UNAC PARK RALLY TURNS INTO OLD FASHION RALLY When COGIC saints get together, there's no telling what will happen. But, one thing is certain, something good is in-store. One songwriter puts it this way "We're gonna have a time..." And what a time the saints had at the recent UNAC-5 held July 5-11 in San Francisco, California. Most of the training sessions and services were held in San Francisco Hilton Hotel. But one of the most exciting services took place OUTSIDE! That's right Outside! on day- four of the convention over 1,000 saints showed up at a park near the San Francisco Civic Center to unashamedly lift up the name of Jesus in an outdoor rally. What happened, however, is that the rally turned into an old-fashioned Holy Ghost revival! The saints had a handclapping, foot-stomping, good time. This is otherwise known as "having church." There were no church walls to enclose them, no church steeple to cover them, or no church pews to seat them. But, the saints still had church because they were the church. They didn't need to have a church building in order to hold a church service. So the hundreds of rally participants went on and had church like they were at home in one of their own indoor revival services. The climax of that Thursday afternoon service was a soul-stirring message preached by Evangelist Albert Pass from Holly Springs, Mississippi. Well-known throughout the country as an outstanding, dynamic preacher with a productive ministry, Elder Pass rose to the occasion equipped by the spirit of God. His effective ministry of the Word resulted in the salvation of twelve souls. These responses to the altar call are what made the Rally In The Park a success. For success is achieved when a purpose is fulfilled. The purpose of the rally, of course, was to win souls. This is really what it's all about anyway. It would have been tragic if the city of San Francisco was left untouched by the UNAC delegation. The purpose of the church is to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world. In other words, the church is to be a positive influence in society. Events like the UNAC Rally In The Park served to take out-doors what the church does CONTINUED ON PAGE 8
