Sherpa Tensing
Receives a Bible
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Winward are British Pentecostal Missionaries at Darjeeling on the Tibetan
Border. In this charming picture their little
daughter, Mary Anne Winward, is presenting
Sherpa Tensing, the famous climber of Mount
Everest, with a Bible.
Frank Winward writes to the Editor—" We have
known Tensing for some years, before he achieved
the world's head-lines, and we are glad to tell you
that he still is a very humble man. He has been to
our house, and we to his. I have one of his sleeping-bags used on the Swiss Everest Expedition.
We have given Tensing a Bible, but many of you
will be sad to know that so far he does not read or
write any ianguagc, though he speaks several. We
told him he should learn, but he said the only thing
he knows is climbing, climbing, climbing ! Tensing
has two daughters who are in the Scots Mission
School and they both read and write, so we asked
them to read the Bible to their father. We have
given him a Bible trusting that he will scale
spiritual heights. Mary Anne has just said : ' Tell
them to pray for him '."
