SCIENCE AND YOU YOUR WEATHER - THE COLD FACTS The English always talk about the weather—at least that is our national reputation. Our peers reminisce about the times when "summers were summers and winters were winters". They go on to explain that the present mix-up began with the H-bomb. Is our weather actually changing? The average temperature in England over the last 30 years is 1°C (1*8°F) lower than for the previous 30 years. In the earlier decades of this century only the winters of 1917 and 1929 were classed as severe. Since then the winters of 1940, 1941, 1942, 1947, 1963 have been severe and 1945, 1951, and 1963 had an exceptionally cold month. At the time of writing the last mild winter was 1966-7. Besides generally colder winters, spring tends to arrive later, by as much as 10-14 days. Between 1923 and 1952 there were no late springs, but since 1952 half the springs have been late. December and February are usually colder than January. October is anomalous in having increased its average temperature. This is seen by the recent Indian summers. October 1969 was the warmest October for 200 years. A comprehensive picture of past weather has been obtained by a study of ice in Northern Greenland. The amounts of the radioactive isotopes of oxygen and hydrogen in ice vary with the formation temperature of the snow that later constitutes the ice. By examining cores of ice penetrating 1400 metres down to the bedrock a picture of the weather over the past 800 years can be formed. It has been found that the weather has fluctuated between mild by S. Crisp, B.Sc, Ph.D. and cold periods. 1900-1970 has been a warm period, but the closing decades of the century promise to be colder, with the next temperature maximum around 2015. These predictions, however, may be invalidated by neglecting the effects of pollution of the atmosphere by dust and carbon dioxide. I suppose it is novel to regard the earth's ice layers as gigantic weather libraries. It is nature's prototype of information storage by computer. However, with the latter, protest groups are already opposing the collection of personal details. After all we do not wish to have anyone able to pry into our private affairs like some glaciologist drilling out his arctic ice core! But just as the history of weather is recorded in ice and snow, so God keeps a minute account of our lives. The Bible tells us that God is to judge every man on the basis of his life. I am sure there are thoughts and deeds each prefer to forget. Clearly no one has lived well enough to sustain God's judgment—except Jesus. He lived an absolutely perfect life. After God publicly acknowledged His satisfaction in Jesus, Jesus bore the judgment of all men, without being destroyed Himself. How could one man atone for all? That man was God and man. By placing your trust in Him and accepting His love your record of sin is forgotten for ever by God. "No condemnation now hangs over the head of those who are 'in* Jesus Christ. For the new spiritual principle of life 'in' Christ lifts me out of the old vicious circle of sin and death." (Romans 8:1, 2 Phillips). Printed by Clearpolnt Press Limited Nottlnghan
