PNEUMATOLOGY: Studies in the Doctrine of the Holy Spirit '.NSISSII The Gifts of Healing Sickness is the abbreviator and destroyer of life and thus the fall of Adam introduced the inevitability of death. For just as, because of union of nature, in Adam all people die, so also, by virtue of their union of nature shall all in Christ be made alive (1 Cor. 15:22. A.N.T.). The forbidden Tree was the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil and their exclusion from the Garden put the Tree of Life out of their grasp. Death therefore, outside the Garden of Eden, was inevitable (Gen. 2:16,17 and3:22-24).Sickness therefore had to be involved in the Atonement for it was a direct result of sin. However, there is obviously a difference between freedom from sin and deliverance from sickness This body is subject to sickness and decay and will die. Healing is only a temporary affair. Lazarus eventually died, though raised from the dead by Christ. All those healed by Jesus eventually died. So we see that there is a day coming when the full effect of the atonement will be seen in our glorified bodies THAT SHALL KNOW NO DECAY OR DEATH but will be precisely the same as the Master's body, living in the power of endless life. Since Adam sin and sickness and death have covered this scene of time. We had the occasional healing during the 4,000 year period of the Old Testament. The Brazen serpent dealing with those suffering from deadly poison. Naamans' seven dippings in Jordan bringing deliverance from leprosy. Hezekiah's boils healing with a plaster of figs (Isaiah 38:21). This healing being something akin to an old-fashioned Heath and Heather treatment. During the Life of Jesus, despite His amazing healing power, sickness persisted. One would question whether any physician went out of business because of the ministry of Jesus. And today with every medical advance, with antibiotics, injections, drugs of a 1,000 varieties, intricately amazing surgery, etc., sickness continues. So we conclude our first point The Appalling Fact of Sickness and its Unabated Continuance. Secondly, let us consider The Wonderful Truth of Miraculous Physical Healing. The display of healing power by Jesus was truly phenomenal and multi-varied. We think of the High Priest's servant's ear in Luke 22: 50-51. Here was a speeding of natural healing. An efficient surgeon can today sew back limbs but it takes a long time for the natural forces of healing to make a complete job. Jesus did it in a split second ! In John 4:48-53 we read of the Nobleman's Son who BEGAN TO MEND. And with the Blind Man at Bethsaida in Mark 8: 22-25, healing was in two stages. It is evident, however, from a close study of the life of Jesus that some of His days were full of demonstrations of His healing power and it would be difficult to assess the full emotional effect upon the crowds witnessing such scenes. Blindness, deafness, paralysis, dumbness, internal troubles, spinal complaints, mental 2nd JULY, 1970 by GERALD W. CHAMBERLAIN, Upper Gornal deficiency, demon possession and death all surrendered to the Mighty Power of the Wonderful Christ. We further think of This Wonderful Gift in Operation in the Days of the Apostles and up to this very day. From the time of the healing of the man at the Beautiful Gate until this present day there has been a veritable stream of testimonies to the fact that our God is a Healing God. We feel that God's healing gifts embrace all forms of natural healing (though not included in the term as we are using it for this study, viz Gifts of Healings). There is the Balm of Time that will put right a million various ills. There are God inspired, rightly applied methods of healing, such as herbal remedies. Osteopathy (bone manipulation), in some cases shock treatment for mental and nerve disorders. But in the matter of Gifts of Healings we are thinking, not of natural or human help but A COMPLETE DELIVERANCE FROM HEAVEN WHEN MAN'S EXTREMITY HAS BEEN REACHED. Divine Healing is something that ignores time and conditions and complete health is restored. Also we must think of MIRACULOUS DELIVERANCE when God uses His prerogative in DESTROYING certain causes of sickness and then recreating new component parts of the body in a moment of time. In my lifetime I have known of a new tongue, complete new colon, and a new eye developing immediately in a human body that has wonderfully extended the life span. We now consider the difference between Church Healing and Evangelistic Healing. There is significantly very little reference in the Gospels to the followers of Christ receiving healing. Some became his disciples after they had been delivered, such as Mary Magdalene out of whom He cast seven devils, and we remember that Lazarus was raised from the dead and Peter's mother-in- law was healed. Apart from these three it would appear that Jesus healed the unbeliever exclusively. His was Evangelistic Healing. It drew the crowd to hear His message of life. The Commission in Mark 16, shows a tremendous authority vested in "THEM THAT BELIEVE". This again is obviously Evangelistic Healing, and is not the normal order for the Church. Church Healing, according to James, operates slightly differently. If you are afflicted, that is ill-treated or suffering evil, you should pray about the matter yourself. If you are glad at heart, you should sing praise to God, you have no right to be silent. This will bring a right atmosphere into the Lord's house. But if you are sick, that is prostrated and unable to move out to the Ecclesia (the Assembly or gathering of God's people) you should call for the Church Elders, the spiritual guides. They should pray over the person concerned, anointing with oil in the Lord's Name. And the prayer of faith will save him that is sick and the
