The Pentecostal Visions of
To=day,
By T. B. BARRATT, of Christiania, Norway.
A letter has been sent me, written by Bro. J. Seitz, of Germany, and endorsed by Pastor Otto Stockmeyer. Although the
" latter rain movement" seems to be approved in several
respects, the letter contains a general warning concerning
visions, revelations, and the numerous involuntary prostrations
that have taken place in this movement under the powerful
influence of the Holy Spirit.
I, for one, am thankful for any timely warning against anything that might prove to be a device of the Evil One, or a
counterfeit of the flesh, but at the same time must confess that I
heartily differ with the wholesale condemnation of visions,
revelations and prostrations to be found in this letter.
In this, as in all other cases, we have to—
stand by the Bible and facts.
Hundreds of years before Pentecost the prophet Joel said (ii,
28), " It shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour my Spirit
upon all flesh ; and your sons and your daughters shall prophecy,
your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see
visions; and also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in
those days will I pour out my spirit; and I will shew wonders in
the heavens and in the earth, blood and fire and pillars of smoke
The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood,
before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. And it
shall come to pass that whosoever shall call on the Name of the
Lord shall be delivered."
Now on Pentecost when the Holy Ghost was given to the
Church, Peter stated that the prophetic speaking in tongues that
took place there (Acts ii, 8-21) corroborated the prophecy of Joel
and was one of the results of this mighty outpouring of the Holy
Spirit. That's a fact. Both the prophet and the apostle argue
that visions, dreams and signs are caused by the same holy
influence. That is also a fact. If Peter considered the first
days of the Christian Church to be a part of the " last days," then
surely we, about 2,000 years later, have good reason to believe
