THERE are two inevitable looks, at the beginning of
he year—the backward and the foreward. The
former fills us with much gratitude for all the Lord has
done in the past; and with shame that we have done so
little for Him.
"Thou shalt remember all the way the Lord thy God
hath led thee," for we owe much to the past, it has taught
us many priceless lessons. It is this experience—the testimony of the years—that makes us sure of God's ability to
guide and keep us in the future. He has proved Himself
to be A VERY PRESENT HELP IN TROUBLE
(Psalm 46-1); the JEHOVAH-JIREH, and the EVER
FAITHFUL FRIEND."
The forward look should, therefore, be one of confidence in God's ability to keep us, and of determination to
be more consecrated to His service, so that we may enjoy
intimate companionship with Himself.
THE CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESS.
In the Book of Joshua, Chapter 1:8-9, God laid down
conditions for the prosperous and successful walk with
Himself. Joshua had to fulfil these conditions to claim
the promised Fellowship of God whithersoever he went.
God is no respecter of persons and if we do according to
all that is written in THE BOOK, God will speak to us
to-day, and give the assurance—"As I was with Moses,
so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake
thee."
What a glorious and comforting truth to carry us into
the New Year of Adventure for God; we are not alone,
for GOD IS WITH US. Therefore let us fortify ourselves with it, and, like Abraham, step out into the
unknown in fellowship with God.
THE HERITAGE OF THE BELIEVER.
The abiding presence of God is the heritage of every
believer. We speak about a sense of His presence, with
the result that we sometimes are rejoicing in it, and at
other times we find ourselves in the valley of gloom and
doubt: whereas God desires us to rest in faith upon the
changeless reality of His presence with us at all times,
for ours is a walk of faith.
As we step along life's pathway our feelings and often
some of our experiences would seem to suggest that God
is indifferent to our needs, and has left us to walk alone.
The shadows of life have hid His blessed face for a while,
and a sense of sadness has crept into our heart, and like
the Psalmist we have cried: "Wherefore hidest Thou Thy
face" ?*, Such experiences are not uncommon to the
Lord's people.
Christ was with His two disciples on the road from
Jerusalem to Emmaus, "but their eyes were holden that
they should not know Him." He walked with them
although not recognised. When breaking bread in their
home, He made Himself known unto them. Again we
read, HE VANISHED OUT OF THEIR SIGHT (V.32),
which suggests that Christ removed His presence completely from them. In the margin of our Bible we have
the words rendered "and He ceased to be seen of them."
It is not said He went away. He was still there, but
unseen. Christ is with us when His presence is least
realised.
LIGHT IN OUR DARKNESS.
The God-planned way does not exclude rough roads,
but what a vast difference the companionship of the Lord
Jesus Christ makes to life's journey. The light of His
friendship is like the light of phosphorus, seen plainest
when all around is dark.
HAPPY NEW YEAR.
I do not know, I cannot see,
What God's kind hand prepares for me,
Nor can my glance pierce through the haze
Which covers alt my future ways;
But yet I know that o'er it alt
Rules He who notes the sparrow's fait.
I know the hand that hath me fed,
And thtough the year my feet hath led;
I know the everlasting arm-
That hath upheld and kept from harm.
I trust Him as my God and Guide,
And know that He will still provide.
So at the opening of the year
I banish care and doubt and fear,
And clasping His kind hand, essay
To walk with God from day to day,
Trusting in Him who hath me fed,
Walking with Him who hath me lei.
I know not where His hand shall lead,
Through desert wastes, o'er flowery Mead;
Mid tangled thicket set with thorn,
Mid gloom of night or glow of morn;
But still I know my Father's hand
WUl bring me to his-goodly land.
Farewell, Old Tear, with goodness crowned,
A hand divine hath set thy bound.
Welcome the New Tear, which shall bring
Fresh blessings from my God and King.
The Old we eave without a tear,
The New we hail without a fear.
