FORWARD IN 1945,

A " and," even if my voice were loud enough for open-air
speaking, I could never remember what I intended to say.
As for visiting with assembly magazines that is something
for which I am just not cut out; you need personality for that
work."
" But when did you last attempt any of these things"
hazarded the ever-hopeful pastor.
" Well, I've never even tried such tasks, I know they arc
beyond me; you see I'm just one of the rank and file."
So were David's.homeless, unemployed and embittered four-
hundred, but under his training they became mighty men.
You see, the esteemed brother mentioned above was defeated
in spirit before he had even begun. Our progress in 1945 will
be largely due to the spirit in which we enter the new year.
" Speak unto the children of Israel that they go forward.".
First, it is
A COMMAND.
God orders a general advance on all fronts; to turn deaf
ears to this command is disobedience. Christ is prepared to
lead His followers on; not to follow is disloyalty. The Holy
Spirit, as always, controls and maintains the advancing forces;
not to respond to His clear impulse is stubbornness.
Forward ! Let the Divine call echo and re-echo in our
hearts. " His kingdom cannot fail, He rules o'er earth and
,heaven." Victory is certain to tireless followers of "great
David's greater Son." Let courage be summoned, loins girded
and arms bared for action. Our God is marching on.
How will the advance be made ? The whole line will
advance in the measure of each individual's advance. Therefore, prepare in personal life to make fresh headway in
devotion to your Master. Let all your past attachment to Him
be eclipsed by a new burning love. Territory is to be gained
in prayer; the heart to be still further softened by more time
in the Lord's presence. Or there is home-life; perhaps there
is room for more unselfishness, scope for the Christ-like spirit.
Remember, the word is " forward." Now it is business-life.
Room for advance here ? Yes: carry the Gospel banner
further into the hosts of wickedness. Unashamedly confess
your birth, lineage and aspirations. Win souls to Jesus. Risk
exposing your Christian principles. Lastly, it is assembly-
life. Do you want to see your assembly press forward? 'Then
remember it all depends on you. Let your sacrifice of labour
and giving have an edge on it. Let your zeal provoke others.
In all these matters we ought to go forward.
Forward!—but let us not omit to see that this also constitutes
A CHALLENGE.
God's people advancing means Satan's forces retreating. An
awakening in the camp of the Christians will inevitably result
in a stir among the ungodly and impenitent. Our opponent
may be expected to bring his veteran forces into action and
use methods of attrition that have so often proved effective.
There is first the supreme commander himself, Satan, whose
presence and personal direction on the field is a guarantee that
every advance ordered by God will be cunningly countered.
At his headquarters are his two henchmen, well decorated for
their successes, The Flesh and The World. The first, by
camouflaged attractions of ease and comfort together with
his compromise-propaganda, has halved the momentum of
many an advance, while the second with his latest " post-war
mirage" and " I-was-once-a-pentecostal " leaflets causes dissatisfaction to ferment in the Christian ranks, so that quite
often gaps appear in the line and resistance is weakened.
Assuredly, all advance will be resisted, but who are the
followers of the Nazarene? 'Mid the smoke and blood of a
sharp naval engagement, from the bridge of the leading ship,
a dying captain recently sent this last message to his men,
" Continue to engage the enemy." From within the pearly
gates the wounded, but risen, Emmanuel calls His followers
"Forward." Let courage and devotionâ– rise to new heights,
for remember salvation is only in advance; to be for ever
consolidating is like too slowly climbing a descending escalator.
Therefore, we must go forward.
Forward! .Thank God we have every right to say that
obedience to this command, attention to this challenge will
result in
A CONQUEST.
We are assured that God cannot be outwitted by Satan's
schemes; Jesus Christ our mighty Leader cannot be overthrown
—He dieth no more, death hath no more dominion over Him;
the power of the Holy Spirit is ever the Christian's impetus.
Forward then, for every day brings nearer ^he final victory.
Every heart to the work in hand, all eyes on our Leader, all
weapons primed and in hand; and when arms grow weary and
hearts faint, remember the simple but effective song composed
by the negro and set to the tune " While shepherds watched
their flocks by night: "
mf Go on, go on, go on, go on,
cr Go on, go on, go on,
ff Go on, go on, go on , go on,
pp Go on, go on, go on.
In this spirit and by God's grace we shall go forward.
Do not meet to-morrow's trials to-day. God's promise is
that "As thy days so shall thy strength be." He does not give
it to-day to be used to-monrow; but each day's need brings its
grace sufficient. We know not what trials, difficulties, perplexities, necessities, temptations, or persecutions will meet us in
1945; but God knows, and that is enough for the soul who
really leans all his weight on Him. " He knoweth the way
that I take; when He hath tried me I shall come forth as
gold."
