Vol 19. No. 1. JANUARY 1st, 1943. TWOPENXE. fcm_ 'A A MESSAGE OF HOPE FOR THE NEW YEAR— "TLHIi COMIIIINICi ©F TIHIIE ILOiD DRAWETH NIGH." Momentous and Portentous Happenings. (No. 4). W. BERNARD. I WONDER how many of my readers, looking up into the night sky can recognise the constellation Ursa Major, sometimes called, from its shape, the Plough. Such will probably know how by means of this group of stars we locate Polaris, the Pole Star. This is done by drawing an imaginary line through the pointer stars Merak and Dubha and projecting the line beyond them we reach Polaris. Figuratively speaking, there can be found in the Bible two pointer stars through which we "are able to locate with certainty the period at which the return of our Lord Jesus Christ may be looked for. On discerning the appearing of these stars we are bid to look up and lift our heads knowing that our redemption draweth nigh. It is the recognising that at the piesent time these Biblical pointers are now visible, supported as they are by the incidents recorded in my former articles that shuts me up to the inescapable conviction that the great event is now at hand, and that indeed, "Jesus is coming soon." These which we have labelled pointer stars are events, prophetically mentioned in the Scriptures as events leading up directly to* the Lord's return. Thus when we see the things so indicated coming to pass we know of a surety that the return is nigh at hand. They are as sure a guide to this as Merak and Dubha are to the finding of Polaris. In the verses twenty-four to twenty-seven of St. Luke, twenty-first chapter, we find, so to speak, our astronomical chart on which we discover our pointer stars and our Polaris. We see in these four verses mention of two events which, when they happen, indicate clearly that the Second Advent is at the door. Two momentous and portentous happenings linked up with and pointing to the greatest happening of all. In the verses which I have mentioned the Lord is speaking. Having foretold the forthcoming banishment of the Jews from Jerusalem he ends this prediction with the significant word "until"—"until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled"! Thus the Lord indicated that the banishment is only for a specified period, after which the Jews would return again. This return will demonstrate that the period named in the plan of God—"the times of the Gentiles" has cnme to an end. Further it will plainly indicate that the coming of the Lord is at hand. Here therefore is our pointer star number one. The second star in the verses we are studying is found in the prediction that the world was doomed to pass through a terrible period of distress. Our Merak is the return to Jerusalem of the Jews. Our Dubha is the coming on the nations of the earth of a period so awful that before it men's hearts shall fail—"shall swoon" another rendering of these words;—men shall swoon with fear
