Greater Things Ahead
" This one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for
the prize." Phil 3; 13, 14.
SOME people are always living in the past; their minds are constantly
reviewing the things that have been. The apostle Paul tells us
what his attitude was to things behind—HE FORGOT THEM—he put
them out of his memory. He refused to live in the past, or on past experiences. He counted them as loss, not to be clung to.
By the things behind he may have meant PAST FAILURES. What
blunders he had made in those early years when he so fiercely persecuted
the Church. The devil would seek to bring back those terrible memories,
but Paul resolutely put them from him. We have all failed God at times,
but we gain nothing by dwelling upon our shortcomings. The apostle
may have been referring to PAST BLESSINGS. We will thank God for
them all, but, remember, you cannot live on the mercies that are past.
Beside which, let us never imagine that we have exhausted God's storehouse. Paul had been very successful in his labours for Christ, but PAST
ACCOMPLISHMENTS did not engage his thoughts. Some are always
boasting of their works. If we are tempted to glory, let us glory in our
infirmities. Many pride themselves on PAST ATTAINMENTS, but Paul
felt he himself had not attained. None of us are yet where God wants us
in the spiritual life.
Paul had hopes of greater things for the future. He was not content,
only eager for more. There are GREATER VICTORIES to be won,
through Him who strengtheneth us. GREATER BLESSINGS lie ahead of
us than eye hath ever seen or ear heard; the future can eclipse the past.
Seeing our Lord said " Greater works than these shall ye do . . . ,';
GREATER ACCOMPLISHMENTS shall be the portion of those who "know
their God." And even as Paul strained every nerve and muscle in the
great race, so should we press forward for GREATER ATTAINMENTS.
God helping us, this shall be our holy ambition for the New Year.
