TWO PENCE
"ARISE, GO OVER
(Josh. i. 2)
THE LORD'S FAITHFULNESS IN THE PAST IS OUR
GUARANTEE FOR THE UNKNOWN FUTURE
IT was the beginning of a new
"chapter" in the history of a nation.
For us, it is the beginning of a New
Year. Can our new year also become
the beginning of a " new chapter " in
our lives?
Israel was leaving much behind in
the wilderness : the graves of a whole
generation of unbelief; some glowing
experiences of victory; but also defeats.
Aaron had been gathered to his people;
and now even Moses was gone also.
All the old anchors seemed slipping
away.
Yet those wilderness years had left
a rich heritage of proving the Divine
faithfulness. Manna morning by
morning had never failed: water had
come from the Rock. The mixed multitude that had come out of Egypt had
been disciplined into a well-ordered
army. A tabernacle had been made
according " to the pattern "• and a
system of Divine Worship established.
The past had been rich.
But all eyes were now upon the
Future. A Promised Land was just
ahead, in full view, scarcely more than
a matter of yards away, and to be
entered in the course of only a few
days. Suppressed excitement would
have been pardonable, and indeed
inevitable. Perhaps just a little fear too
—they remembered the tales of those
giants!
Joshua was the one living link with
the past. He had led to victory against
Amalek; and he was still their captain.
Best of all, and the greatest essential of
all—GOD WAS WITH HIM. " As
I was with Moses, so I will be with
thee." They had a leader still. All was
well with Israel.
1934
A bower unknown; a book unread;
A tree with fruit unharvested;
A path untrod; a house whose rooms
Lack yet the heart's divine perfumes;
A landscape whose wild border lies
In silent shade, 'neath silent skies;
A wondrous fountain yet unseal'd;
A casket with its gifts concealed;
This is the year that for you waits
Beyond to-morrow's mystic gate!
—H. N. Powers.
The Church's " Joshua " is the
Lord Jesus Christ. The past has established His Faithfulness : the hopes and
fears of the present turn to the assurance of faith as we look to HIM : the
future contains possession of the Land
He has promised. " ARISE, GO
OVER." By Thy grace, we will.
