Has He Got Your Heart ?
This is how Mrs. William Booth, " Mother " of the Salvation Army, wrote to a
gentleman who had written to her enquiring the way of life.
Dear M .,
I rejoice to recognise the work of
the Spirit of God in the awakening
of your hitherto slumbering soul,
and will try, as He shall help me,
to answer your most momentous
question—" Is there a living God?"
Yes, there is a living, personal
God, who both hears, speaks to,
and satisfies His children as truly
in this age as in any former age,
and Who wants to reveal Himself
to you, if you will put yourself on
the lines of communication. I
would warn you, however, from setting vourself to find out God by
your understanding, for He cannot
be revealed either to matter or mind,
strictly speaking, but only to spirit.
You will probably admit that you
are possessed of three natures—the
physical, mental and spiritual—and
you will see that each of these has
its separate spheres of action, and
requires entirely different treatment.
For instance, volumes of the choicest
literature, which might be delightful
and satisfying food for your mind,
would utterly fail to meet the wants
of your body, and vice versa, the
choicest viands cannot satisfy the
mind. Just so, the spiritual nature
demands its appropriate food; and,
although ignored and abused in the
majority of mankind, it asserts itself
and shows its paramount power by
making those most miserable who
try hardest to satisfy its cravings
with merely physical and mental aliment. Our souls were created for
fellowship with, and enjoyment of,
the Divine, and nothing less can
ever fill or satisfy them.
These questions which you have
been asking yourself have been the
result of the quickening breath of
the Holy Spirit; and, if you will
follow where they point, you will
find. God.
" But how am I to find Him?"
Seek Him, " feel after Him, and
haply you shall find Him, for He is
not far from any one of us; for in
Him we live and move and have our
being." Only, the faculties which
could alone perceive Him have in
most cases been narcoticised by the
world, the flesh, and the devil. God
is now moving on you, seeking you.
Will you seek Him?
How are you to seek Him? By
simply yielding your heart up to
Him. Never mind about intellectually comprehending Him. Let your
heart—your spiritual nature—that
in you which craves for satisfaction,
for love, for fellowship—let that
part of you cry out after God, and
' yield to His movings on your soul,
and I have not a doubt that He will
reveal Himself to you, and you shall
" know the Lord."
You will perhaps perceive, from
this putting of facts referring to our
spiritual necessities, why it is that
there is so much of the Bible reading and argument to which you refer
with so little spiritual result. Bible
truth is as powerless, as any other
truth received merely into the intel
lect, unless the heart be committed
to it. Hence so many know so
much and love so little, believe so
much and do so little.
I dare say you have known
instances of a young man trying to
woo a young woman, where the girl
herself has respected and esteemed
the man, and all her friends have
been in his favour, but where the
heart—the affections—could not or
would not be yielded. The poor
girl may have read sheets and sheets
about his excellencies and his
capacity to make her happy, and she
may really have believed them, and
yet her heart was not yielded, and
therefore there could be no real fellowship. Of course the illustration
falls short in one point, because the
Heavenly Bridegroom never woos
without giving the power to yield;
though, alas! many will not embrace
the power because of some supposed
loss or suffering which the heavenly
alliance would entail. But the point
I want to illustrate is, that the heart
must be yielded before any true
knowledge of, or fellowship with,
God can be realised. Hence, "with
the heart man believeth " is as
philosophically as it is scriptu rally
correct. It means with the heart
man commits himself, either to God
or man.
The Heavenly Bridegroom is
wooing you; will you yield Him
your heart? Here the whole question of your Salvation hinges, and
not on your being able to understand
and subscribe to all the Christian
doctrines.
Do you want the Truth to be True?
Do you wish God to be, and to
be what He has revealed Himself, a
holy Being, who will banish all un-
