O
Cecil H. Polhill - Pentcostal Layman
1. Life prior to Pentecostal involvement
Cecil Henry Polhill was born on 23rd February, 1860, the second son of
Captain Frederick C. Polhill-Turnerl and Emily Frances, his wife. Born and
bred at Howbury Hall, the family home just to the east of Bedford, Cecil was
sent to Eton and thence to Jesus College, Cambridge in preparation for a
career in the army. In accordance with the common custom in landed
families, the plan was that the eldest son Frederick would inherit Howbury
Hall, the second son Cecil would join the army and the third son, Arthur,
would be ordained and take the family living in the nearby village of
Renhold. Cecil received his commission in the Queen's Bays (2nd Dragoon
Guards) in 1881 and joined his regiment in Ireland that autumn. At that
time he was a typical young subaltern of means, enjoying the pleasures of
life, particularly in the sphere of sport.2 Religion was of nojjbvious
significance to him, and he effectively rebuffed the attempts of his older
sister Alice, who had experienced conversion and had subsequently attempted
to evangelise her brothers. The only cloud in Polhill's world at this time
was the sudden death of his father as Cecil left for Ireland.
It was over a year before Polhill's indifference to religion was
challenged. During his winter leave in 1882-3 at Howbury Hall, Cecil was
shocked by a change in his brother Arthur. Cecil remarked one day on
Arthur's succeeding to the family living, and Arthur confided that he
probably wouldn't take the Renhold living as he was thinking of going to
China as a missionary. After much argument about Arthur's new devotion to
Jesus Christ, Cecil was persuaded to read a few verses from the Bible each
day. Here we find a characteristic of Cecil Polhill that was constant
