VI COGIC HEADQUARTERS, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE CONVENTION EDITION, JULY 1994 COGIC CONVENTIONS INSPIRE THOUSANDS MORE THAN 600 YOUTH RECEIVE BAPTISM OF HOLY GHOST DURING 1994 INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS With the theme, "The World's Greatest Need: God's Holy Word." Youth Congress President C H. Brewer and Chairlady Deborah Thomas challenged COGIC youth attending the International Congress in Louisville, the first week in July, to embrace the principles of biblical holiness for their lives Tbosc who attended the Annual International Youth Congress in Lousiville, Kentucky were in- Bishop Charlie Brewer with Host Bishop A.T Moore. spired by the scores of youth who were in attendance. These dedicated youth were a reminder that all youth are not godless, gang members using and abusing drugs. Convention Coordinator, Bishop W.L. Porter, received great cooperation from the Kentucky hosting bishops, COGIC patriarch, Bishop A.T. Moore and the now deceased Bishop M.J. Sykes (who died during the Convention). As well, Central Junsdiction of Tennessee provided both financial and numerical support in a co- hosting role. The Convention headquarters, the Historic Gait House, on the Ohio River, provided an inspinng and scenic setting for the delegates Pastor Arthur Patterson of Louisville, KY. worked with Bishop Porter as the Host Junsdictions' Convention Committee Chairman. Elder Brandon Porter, the coordinator for the Workshops and Worship dunng the day sessions, reported that over 600 youth testified that they received the baptism of the Holy Ghost during the convention. During the Wednesday afternoon session there was an anointed outpouring during SUPER • CONFERENCES HIGHLIGHT 1994 SUNDAY SCHOOL CONVENTION Deborah Thomas - Chairlady. which nearly 200 youth received the Baptism in the same setting, One young man, only 14 years old, was saved and filled; with sobbing and tears he testified that he never believed he would be saved because as a gang member he "...had wasted (murdered) ...two people." The workshops for the children and youth ranged from arts and crafts lo children's church to a seminar on Emotional Healing for those who arc, or have been, victims of emotional, sexual and/or Sunday School Superintendent. Jerry Macklin expounds on the theme A Powerful Army - Fervent in Spirit, Mighty in War! Convention Coordinator, Bishop W L. Porter, steers successful meeting. physical abuse. The preaching, during the day, evening and midnight sessions, was superb. Dr Felton Smith. Jr. of Chattanooga. Pastor Ray Iglehart of New Orleans; Evangelist Richard 'Mr Clean' White of Atlanta. Continued on page 2 The Bishops and saints of the Lone Star state, situated just north of Mexico, proved once again why Texas is reputed for always producing bigger and better things. The International Sunday School Convention (ISSC - Houston, Texas), headed by Elder Jerry Macklin and Field Representative, Gloria Smith, was declared one of the best conventions in the history of the ISSC. There are eleven jurisdictions in this huge southwestern state. The moral and financial support from the hosting bishops inspired Superintendent Macklin and the other officials of the convention and enabled them to be fiscally and spiritually successful. The thousands who attended the ISSC were not disappointed. The worship and training sessions were extremely well formatted and remarkably informative. Constantly referring to the departmental workers and delegates as "the Sunday School family," Elder Macklin appealed to the tradition of this great arm of the church that always prides itself as being the training ground and "hotbed" for the church's other ministries. The workshops were comprehen sive in that they covered a spectrum of issues for all age levels, for both genders and for all ministerial ranks, from laymen to bishops. The powershops and workshops culminated with special "super-conferences" on Friday morning for women only and men only. The Women's Conference provided forums for discussing issues unique to African-American COGIC- Christian females. The men's conference was a forum for addressing issues unique to the African-American COGIC-Christian male. The International Supervisor of Women, Mother Emma Crouch, addressed the joint session of the Women. Bishop L. H. Ford closed the Men's Conference with a dynamic summary of the issues that face the African-Amencan male as he stands on the precipice of the twenty-first (21 st) century. Elder Jerry Macklin and a host of dynamic speakers expounded on the Convention's theme " A Powerful Army - Fervent in Spirit, Mighty in War." Among the convention's speakers were: Elder Robert Smith; newly elected Bishop, Ivory Holden; and Bishop L. H. Ford.
