The National/International Memorial Service for the Most Reverend James
Ogelthorpe Patterson, Sr., was conducted, Thursday, January 4, 1990 at
Mason Temple Church Of God In Christ. The officiants were Bishop Louis
Henry Ford, Bishop Chandler David Owens, Bishop John Dale Husband,
Bishop Cleveland Landis Anderson, Bishop Ozro Thurston Jones, Jr., Bishop
Phillip Aquilla Brooks, Bishop Samuel L. Green, Jr., Bishop J. Neaul Haynes,
Bishop Charles Edward Blake, Bishop Levi E. -Willis. Sr. and Bishop Roy
Lawrence Haley Winbush. Tributes and resolutions were presented by
numerous church department heads and officials. While dignitaries and
religious leaders from the world over sat prayerfully, the Church Of God In
Christ said goodbye to a leader unparalleled.
Bishop Samuel L. Green, Jr. opened the services to a softly played organ
prelude and songs from the mass choir. Dr. Mattie Clark had the music splendidly prepared. A magnificent processional came into Mason Temple and the
funeral began. The silence had a calming affect as the acolytes lighted the
candle stands. Behind them came the Adjutant General, General Board of
Bishops, General Officers, Board of Bishops and a host of denominational
leaders. The family, led by Bishop J.O. Patterson, Jr. and Mrs. Mary Patterson, widow of the Presiding Bishop lifted their heads and were pictures of
strength A host of tearful family and friends filed in. After the family and
others had reviewed the remains, the bier was sealed, and a ceremonial cloth draped over the casket.
Everything was done with simplicity and beautifully staged as service befitting the Chief Apostle.
Bishop H. Jenkins Bell, Chief Adjutant led the
Hymn of Comfort. The invocation was given with
a deeply spiritual and healing touch by Bishop John
D. Husband. The Old Testament scripture was read
by Bishop Ozro Thurston Jones, Jr. He read Psalm
90 and the New Testament scripture was offered by
Bishop Charles E. Blake. He presented a passage
in I Corinthians 15:50-58, which was very appropriate. Bishop Phillip Aquilla Brooks led the
congregation in the Statement of Faith. The program was long but Bishop CD. Owens moved the
agenda along smoothly and with deliberate speed.
