Mal 26 'ye shal1 k*°w the truth and the truth shall make you free: John 8 32 VOLUME XXIV, NO. X C.O.G.I.C. HEADQUARTERS, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE OCTOBER, 1989 National Pastors/Elders Conference Soars — Chicago—The Tenth National Pastors/Elders Council Conference was conducted in the great Mid- West, in the city of broad shoulders: Chicago. Under the direction of newly elected chairman, Elder Franklyn Knight and staff, delegates came for fellowship, training and worship. The conference was an unqualified success and the chairman's first national endeavor He and the leadership team selected the stately McCormick Center Hotel as conference site. The theme of the conference was "The Dynamics of Effective Communication For Growth" and daily a host of excellent presenters thoroughly impacted the delegates. Presiding Bishop J. 0. Patterson and many general board members were in attendance. Yet, it was Bishop L H. Ford and the many area bishops who gave vital support to make the surroundings delightful. The warm embrace and vast influence of Bishop Ford was evident across the whole conference. The registration figures were significantly high and were filled with pastors, wives, bishops, and elders. Some general board members also registered as delegates and fully participated in group discussion. The women were invited to participated along with husbands and different joint sessions. There were also special sessions developed and taught by some of the church's leading women. Mrs. Bonnie Knight and staff had a fully developed agenda for the ladies. In both sessions effective ministry was stressed over and over The experience proved educational and spiritually stimulating. The conference began with a musical at the St. Paul Church Of God In Christ. The host pastor, Bishop L H. Ford made all things convenient. Elder W. J. Campbell was the speaker and attempted to preach the kingdom down. Tuesday morning found the delegates yet buzzing about the message. During the opening session, Elder Knight gave official greetings followed by Bishop Ford. From the very opening it was evident the delegates were in for a treat. That day the delegates witnessed a rare mixture of the truly profound and the practical. Speakers included Elder James C.Austin of Chicago, IL. He presented "Maintaining Spirituality in a Growing Church." The pastor was brilliant! He was followed by Elder Dwight McDaniel of St. Louis, Mo. He did presentations of "Proposed Procedures and Guidelines for Jurisdictional Elder's Councils", and as a bonus he conducted a brief tithing seminar. That afternoon, the entire delegation was invited to beautiful St. Luke Church Of God In Christ. Pastor Austin and congregation provided a full meal and saintly hospitality, which set up the evening service. Elder Emmanuel Newton delivered a stirring gospel message to a packed church. The service seemed more like a holy convocation than a conference. Wednesday, the delegates were early to rise and start the day with prayer and testimonies. The speaker for the early morning was Dr. Kenneth Hammonds. This young Greek scholar did a power ful presentation on "Rightly Dividing Trie Word of God." His ability to handle the Greek demonstrated the depth of his knowledge in the discipline in which he earned his degree. Certainly, this Church has people of highest skills. Bishop Charles Blake, general board member, delivered on the topic "The Ministry of the Local Church to the Black Community in the 90's." The final day of the conference was equally rich. Dr. Charles Washington, M.D. presented "Health and the Black Minister". He was excellent and demonstrated sensitivity to the challenges posed to many about medicine and faith. Washington is a life long church member. This day was ended with a panel discussion. The panelist were Dr. Samuel A.DeBose, Supt. Ocie Booker, Bishop C. L. Moody and Dr. Dwight McDaniels. They addressed a variety of subjects. PB Highlights Overflow Banquet Presiding Bishop J. O. Patterson, Sr. addressed the 10th National Pastors/Elders Council Conference The spacious banquet hall of the McCormick Center Hotel was beautifully decorated but proved too small to accommodate the overflow crowd attending the festivities. Chairman Franklyn Knight and his lovely wife Bonnie welcomed the first couple, a host of general board members, bishops, pastors, clergy and saints from around the country. Bishop Patterson was the keynote speaker and truly delivered a splendid address to the packed house, His remarks covered national church agenda, policies and a renewed call for old-fashion holiness values. Bishop's remarks made the theme irSywamY SUPT F.E KNIGHT ^py WOUC^ *iUQUW.naa "The Dynamics of Effective Communications For Growth," come alive with power. At the head table sat the council leadership and general board members. It was apparent how pleased the chairman was to see the crowd, and the people kept on coming. About 100 more attended than planned. Chairman Knight, Elder J, P.Morgan, First Vice Chairman, Elder E. Newton, Second Vice Chairman, Elder E. B. Barnett, Secretary worked in concert with area bishops and their local committees to make the effort a huge success. By the attendance it was apparent their hard work paid off. During the banquet. Chairman Knight presented Bishop L. H. Ford and Bishop Patterson plaques to honor their distinguished service and support in behalf of the pastors and elders. Chairman Knight took the opportunity to publicly pledge his loyal support to the Church's program of ministry. Bishop Patterson's remarks were solid and supportive of the councils agenda.
