Abstract	The social problems that arise when a small racial minority lives in the midst of a community occupied predominantly by another race have long aroused the interest of social investigators. This situation has been a common one in the United States, where many races have at one time or another played the role of the minority in some community. Probably most frequently, however, it has been the Negro who has faced the necessity of adjusting himself to this role of a minority group member.
