| Abstract | North Korea today is recognized by the international community as the setting of some of the worst human rights violations. Harsh conditions, exacerbated by political oppression, have driven tens of thousands of people to defect, mainly across the North Korean-Chinese border. However, upon escape defectors are bombarded by new difficulties and trauma. Those who successfully escape the country are in great danger of being caught and repatriated. Defectors are made to live in fear and often undergo traumatic experiences while on the run. Many defectors have been able to gain asylum in other countries, such as South Korea and, more frequently, the United States as refugees. Still, these refugees face further difficulties as they attempt to rebuild their lives from scratch. Through the experience of one refugee, this article will reveal the plight of North Koreans and the various obstacles NK refugees face during escape and in rebuilding new lives. |
