| Abstract | Boxing is a sport of pure violence. Yet, in this brutal, male-dominated sport, there are many women making boxing their own. After restrictions against female boxers were lifted in 1993, a new generation of female boxers has emerged. These "girl boxers" enjoy privileges never before bestowed upon female fighters. For the first time in the 100 year history of women 's boxing, the sport has become officially recognized. However, despite increased legitimacy, female boxers still have many hurdles to face, especially the exclusion of women' s boxing from the most prestigious tournament of all -- the Olympics. This documentary features a group of young female boxers, their families, and their coaches as they train and compete in tournaments around Southern California. This film follows their fights both inside and outside the ring as they struggle between their uncertain Olympic chances, the lure of professional boxing, and the pressures of the outside world. |
