| Abstract | There are 1.7 million Indians and Pakistanis living in America, but of the 73 major programs in college basketball (BCS conferences) there are no Indians or Pakistanis found on any of their rosters. And despite an overall population of more than a billion, India and Pakistan are not countries that are represented in the NBA.; Many Indian- and Pakistani-American athletes feel that the opportunities to play basketball, or any sport for that matter, at the high school level and higher are limited by racial stereotypes. The image of an Indian as an engineer or a cab driver or a store clerk like Apu from "The Simpsons " persist in popular culture. They are most definitely not seen as natural athletes.; As a partial answer to this but mostly serving as an outlet, a nationwide Indian-Pakistani basketball league was formed. It is simply known as Indo-Pak basketball. |
