| Abstract | In this dissertation I offer a novel characterization of the sense in which akrasia is irrational: it involves the violation of a 'rational commitment'. I analyze this notion of commitment and argue that it is intimately related to the moral sense of commitment that we commonly invoke when speaking of promises. The resulting view gives us resources for better understanding both the nature of promissory obligation and several other issues in normative theory. |
