| Abstract | In this thesis we investigate the Euler number of bundles over surfaces with fiber the circle S¹. We connect this quantity with the existence problem for sections of the bundle. We then compute the Euler number of the unit tangent bundles of various surfaces and deduct a general formula for orientable surfaces of any genus. |
