| Abstract | This thesis attempts to explore the space of labor and the traces it leaves behind as the central site of ideology and ethics in painting. This theme is explored through the examination of two paintings: Ambrosius Bosschaert’s 1619 Bouquet on a Window Ledge and Barnett Newman’s 1950 The Voice. Though centuries apart, these two works both hinge on the artist’s physical involvement to generate and communicate their essential ideologies. |
