| Abstract | This paper proposes the following: (1) accurate language with which to describe computer-mediated-communication in the online, team gaming context. (2) A new term -- Cybridity -- that represents the combined use of both computer-mediated and direct communication, as enacted in a collaborative context. (3) The description of team members who engage in collaborative First-Person Shooter video game tournaments, and the research implications of these important communication practices that have not yet been implemented or studied in online collaborative work, often referred to as virtual work environments. (4) Distinctions in theory that keep pace with the practices in the actual world are crucial to academic work; these field studies are also presented as a cautionary reminder to those who advance theory in the field of communication technology. |
