American working mothers face numerous and specialized challenges at work and at home. However, the U.S. government offers them little support.; Part-time work is often a great solution because it allows women to raise families without permanently sacrificing their careers. However, many women cannot afford to do this, and those that can are often penalized at work. In addition, the U.S. is the only industrialized country that does not offer paid maternity leave, despite the fact that it improves the health of mothers and babies and benefits employers.; Many private companies are beginning to offer paid maternity leave as well as flexible or reduced schedules. However, the U.S. government has yet to pass any laws forcing employers to offer these family-friendly policies.
