Abstract | This research study will contribute knowledge on the underlying causal mechanisms that support and achievement of low-status minority youth in La Causa; the East Los Angeles site of the federally funded youth intervention program Youthbuild. The study will describe how institutional agents mobilize forms of social capital (i.e., access to resources and institutional support) for low-status, minority youth, and how these institutional agents help youth access social capital resources to foster empowerment and resilience. In this mixed-methods study, participants were asked to identify the social resources they access on behalf of program participants through the use of name, resource, and position generators. Participants were also asked to identify group affiliations. An ethnographic interview was conducted, and the results were summarized. Major themes discussed include social networks with a lack of high-status, multiplex relationships, and resistance to help seeking behaviors through issues of pride, avoidance, and personal convictions. The effects of organizational structure on staff effectiveness, and how personal beliefs about politics and the growth of the organization effect the dynamics of the group are also discussed, as are issues of resilience, empowerment and social capital in the context of the intervention program. Implications for K-12 institutions, the community, and other grass-roots intervention programs are discussed, and limitations and possibilities for further research are identified. |
