| Abstract | As the Latino student population across American college campuses continues to increase, so does the need to further understand the unique experiences of Latina/o students. This case study examined the undergraduate experience of 12 academically successful Latino students (7 males, 5 females) at a private, research based university in California. This study examined the perceptions students have of campus culture, the resources used or not use, and some experiential differences based on gender. The results may assist practitioners in higher education gain a better understanding of the Latina/o experience, their use or non-use of university services, and gender differences.; The participants were students who maintained a grade point average of a 3.5 or above after completing 36 units. In addition, both parents were of Latin American descent. Data was obtained through participant interviews, resumes, and profiles.; The overall findings illustrate that the participants had a positive experience at the institution. Participants demonstrated a high level of confidence with their academic ability and had a strong sense of ethnic identity. Latina/o students had a positive campus perception, influenced by the campus history and interactions with others. They navigated the institution by utilizing campus resources, employed a personal support system (peers, faculty, staff, and family), and through the campus aesthetics. All of which resulted in a strong sense of belonging. Findings further suggest the female students were more purposeful with use of resources. Results may also provide guidance to practitioners about the institutional support for Latino students, resources available, resources needed and knowledge on successful Latina/o student activities. Results also illustrate the critical institutional factors identified (scholarship programs with case management and academic support), balanced with academic programs that reflect students' culture. |
