| Abstract | Telling stories is one of the core foundations to experiencing and re-experiencing life. It can explain where we have been, who we are and where we are going -- as Joan Didion says "We tell ourselves stories in order to live."; In "Against Interpretation" Susan Sontag proposes that an artworks interpretation is within the individual's experience. Simply put, instead of art that has a certain context (citing philosophical and intellectual references), which the viewer and the artist must understand to interpret, Sontag instead proposes that art can be experienced for what it is, in such a way that experience is the main criteria. Sontag suggests an activation of interpretation; what is present and what is happening: the 'here and now'. This art can be experienced within the possibilities that every individual interpretation of a work of art is open and bound by the viewer's participation. |
