| Abstract | "The Other Side of Authenticity: Authenticity, Liberalism, and Resistance" argues that despite the fact that authenticity impels individuals in modern movements to engage in resistance against unjust social and/or political structures, the concept of authenticity acts as a reactionary force -- that is, it leads to conformity and/or co-optation in movements through the creation of insiders and outsiders -- when it is interpreted through liberal lenses. Through an analysis and comparison of the philosophy of authenticity with liberal political thought, I find that authenticity takes on two forms that exist simultaneously in tension, one active and one static. When authenticity is interpreted in its static form, it intersects with liberalism at the epistemological and ontological levels; this is when it acts as a reactionary force. I demonstrate how the tension between the two forms of authenticity is exhibited through an analysis of the 1960s Chicano movement and the current immigrant rights movement. |
