| Abstract | Instrument selection is an important component of student success in band. An unsuitable match between student and instrument might impact student retention in a band program or longer-term musical activity. This research investigated band instrument selection, personality predictors (through Saucier's Mini Marker Set) and various influences as identified by students within a sample of convenience that includes 412 students from American International middle and high school bands in five countries. Overall, results indicated a significant relationship between personality and instrument selection (p=.003). When referenced to the Upper Woodwind section, there was significance regarding personality scores for Percussion (p=.015) and for Upper Brass (p=.017). Students identified the sound of the instrument as the strongest influence on band instrument selection, followed in order by the look and size of the instrument. |
