| Abstract | While Downtown is the physical center of Los Angeles, and increasingly seeking to provide a financial and residential hub; it still lacks park amenities, and within that context, public art that reflects the cultural vitality of an urban center. The Grand Avenue Project has the potential to make this transformation. One of the Project's major components is the redevelopment of the Civic Park, which will include a major public art component, and the opportunity to provide a common ground for Angelenos to engage in cultural activities. -- Chicago's Millennium Park is a successful predecessor of such a plan, as it typifies a dynamic and engaging public space, achieved largely through the incorporation of public art. The purpose of this research is to analyze Millennium Park as a case study for the inclusion of public art as an urban revitalization tool, and to make specific recommendations for public art planning for the Civic Park. |
