| Abstract | Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785) left no fewer than four settings of the Miserere text, at least three of which were intended for either of the two ospedali in which he worked: the Ospedale dei Mendicanti or the Ospedale degl’Incurabli. The grandest of the Miserere settings is his C-minor Miserere for double treble chorus and double orchestra, the manuscript of which is housed at the British Museum, Add. 14402. This dissertation determines that the work in question was likely composed for performance at the Incurabili during Holy Week 1764 and was meant to follow an oratorio. Included in this study is a compilation of anecdotal accounts of Galuppi, including those of Charles Burney (1726-1814) and Francesco Caffi (1778-1874). A performing edition of the C- minor Miserere is included in the Appendix. |
