| Abstract | Much controversy exists regarding the related composition of Herbert Howells' Requiem and Hymnus Paradisi. Legend has it that Howells first composed his Requiem (for unaccompanied SATB double-chorus) as a personal expression of grief following the death of his son Michael in 1935. (Unfortunately, Howells also further supported this untruth in numerous interviews promoting performance of Hymnus Paradisi.) New scholarship has determined that the work was commissioned by King's College Cambridge, and was finished in 1932. Howells never sent the completed work to Cambridge, and the Requiem remained unperformed. After Michael's death, Howells used various movements of his unknown Requiem (among other works) as a basis for his great masterpiece, Hymnus Paradisi. Hymnus Paradisi is a large work scored for double chorus, full orchestra, and soprano and tenor soloists. This study will clarify the genesis of Howells' original Requiem, will provide complete analysis of both the Requiem and Hymnus Paradisi, and establish the interconnectedness of both works.; Although Howells' Requiem gained an enormous posthumous audience in the early 1980's, Hymnus Paradisi remains an obscure masterpiece. This study will put to rest continued misconceptions about both works and will increase visibility and understanding of the oft-neglected Hymnus Paradisi. No published scholarship clearly establishes a detailed analysis of the relationship between these works.; My research will include the comparison of information from a lengthy bibliography of books and articles written about Howells and his compositional practices. In addition, my analysis of the Requiem and Hymnus Paradisi will serve as the basis for the core of this study. Both works are published and available for performance. The choral scores are available for purchase through the Novello publishing company, while the orchestral score and parts are available for perusal and rental from G. Schirmer rental library. |
