| Abstract | Many studies examine the impact of students’ characteristics and behaviors on high school outcomes: high school completion, college enrollment or college completion. This study uses regression analyses to explore the association of students’ characteristics and behaviors and students’ positive high school outcomes: graduating on-time, enrolling in a two-year college or enrolling in a four-year college. The study analyzes the longitudinal student records for a Hawaii cohort of public high school graduates.; Academic factors are powerful predictors of student outcomes. Students’ successful academic transition to ninth grade are critical to positive high school outcomes and are better predictors of outcomes than students’ socioeconomic status, ethnicity or gender. Higher grade point average and passing core subjects during freshman year are critical on-track indicators and success factors. Conversely, poor grades and course failures indicate that students are off-track for positive high school outcomes and may serve as early warning indicators to identify students needing additional support to improve their probability of graduating on-time and enrolling in college, particularly four-year colleges. The schools that students attend have an impact on outcomes, and students who attend schools with a more positive learning environment are more likely to graduate high school on-time. |
