| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to examine the successful leadership strategies and behaviors that a new principal employs in a turnaround middle school. Three research questions were developed to guide this study: 1. Do principals in a turnaround situation find the transition period (first 90 days) to be important? 2. What strategies and conceptual frameworks (leadership theories) were useful to new principals during the transition period (first 90 days) in a turnaround school? 3. Did any programs, formal or informal, prepare new principals for success during the transition period (first 90 days) in a turnaround school?; Qualitative and quantitative-analytic case study research methods were used to conduct a cross-case analysis of 10 case studies, each consisting of a new middle school principal, all in different districts. The case studies examined the leadership strategies that the new principals employed during the first 90 days and their preparation program for the new position.; Cross-case analysis revealed the following findings: 1. It is critical for new leaders to develop relationships and build a coalition as soon as they begin a new position. 2. New principals need to gain credibility within the first 90 days through securing early wins, matching the leadership strategy to the given situation, and building their own team. 3. The first 90 days is a significant time for the new principal. It is the time that a principal "makes it or breaks it." 4. The current university preparation programs are not preparing new principals for the complex demands of the position.; This study recommends that university programs and training programs for new principals include on-the-job experience. Components such as problem-based learning, mentorships, field-based internships, and cohort groups can provide opportunities for principal candidates to participate in instructional activities that concentrate on the current responsibilities of the principal. Preparation programs should address what leadership strategies new principals should employ within thefirst 90 days in the position. |
