Abstract | Parent education resources are extremely popular in today's society. However, because there is very little research on the self-perceived informational needs of parents with typical children between the ages of three and five, it is unknown whether current resources address the needs of this population. This study assessed the needs of parents, through three qualitative assessment techniques: a review of nineteen online discussion boards, six interviews, and thirty-four completed surveys.; The results showed that parents need three general forms of information: information that discusses skills and techniques, information about what is normal, and information explaining how to handle different situations. The conclusions also revealed that current parenting programs do not meet the self-perceived needs of parents with typical children. Additionally, the above general themes were found to be unaffected by demographic differences. Ideally, the conclusions of this study will be used in the creation of a need-based, parent education program. |
