| Abstract | The shortage of principals across the United States has created a dilemma for many school systems with regard to hiring and retaining qualified principals. Districts are having more difficulty filling principal positions with qualified candidates. Principals have greater responsibilities and duties, particularly as a result of the No Child Left Behind legislation. What a principal does during the first 90 days and how he/she goes about doing it can have positive or negative outcomes.; This study was conducted to investigate whether the transition period (first 90 days) was critical to the success of a new middle school principal in an urban area. In addition, the cohort of 10 University of Southern California doctoral students sought to find what, if any, conceptual frameworks and/or leadership theories made for a successful principal during the first 90 days and whether university programs prepared a new principal for success during the transition period.; The study was a collaborative effort of the dissertation cohort and included 10 principals, 10 supervisors, 219 teachers, and 40 department chairs. Each researcher studied 1 supervisor, 1 principal, the teachers at the principal’s school site, and 4 department chairs. The researchers analyzed quantitative and qualitative data collected from the participants. The quantitative data included averaging, tallying, and tabulating frequencies using business and educational instruments and charts based on the work of Michael Watkins, Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal, and Richard Marzano. The qualitative data included interviews, surveys, and questionnaires. A cross-case analysis was done by all 10 researchers using the collected data.; Some findings suggested that the first 90 days were critical to a new principal, particularly when establishing credibility with their staff. Other findings indicated that a successful principal should exhibit characteristics and behaviors such as being visible, establishing culture, having a vision, being disciplined, and establishing communication. There were mixed perceptions among supervisors and principals as to whether university programs prepared principals for the transition period. It was found that while university programs prepared administrators with some leadership theories, principals still lacked practical, hands-on experiences. |
