| Abstract | The purpose of this descriptive study was to investigate high school music students’ perception of their participation in selected musical leisure activities. The study population included students (n=1268) participating in instrumental ensembles at twelve schools in a local geographical area within Orange County, California. Students in this study reported spending an average of 24.54 hours per week of leisure time listening to music, with only 3% stating that they do not listen to music outside school. Annual concert attendance was averaged at 3.57 events per student, although 39% reported not attending any concerts. A large majority of students (73%) reported practicing music, the average being 2.47 hours per week, while 31% reported taking private lessons and 27% reported participating in ensembles. Students reported spending more leisure time listening to rock and performing in rock ensembles than any other genre. Conversely, students reported attending more classical concerts than any other type. |
