| Abstract | In this study, 1,008 teachers who had retired from the Los Angeles Unified School District completed an in-depth survey. They were questioned about their demographics, the demographics of their school, their opinions about their career, and their work satisfaction as well as asked about what the reasons for their retirement had been and what might have induced them to remain actively working in their profession for more years. The results of the analysis indicated that 90% of the teachers had retired under the age of 65 and that teachers generally loved their profession but had experienced sharply diminished job satisfaction. Early retirees characterized the workplace and particularly the administration as more problematic than did late retirees. They attributed their retirement decision more often to those problems than to health factors or personal plans. The qualitative analysis, in particular, revealed a deeply critical attitude by all of the participants. Many teachers indicated that better administrators, less paperwork and more time, better discipline and more respect, more autonomy, less testing, a more professional environment, and finally more money could have convinced them to stay more years in the profession. Recommendations for additional research on how to improve the work environment and how to better train and retrain principals are provided. |
