| Abstract | Background: Peri-implant microbial infection elicit an immune response regulated by key cytokines controlling the progression and/or suppression of inflammation.; Purpose: To describe peri-implant levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, microbiology, and virology in clinically healthy sites.; Methods: Implants and teeth were considered clinically healthy. No pocketing (≥4mm), no bleeding on probing (BOP), and no bone loss beyond the first thread was detected. Crevicular fluid sampling and cytokine analysis was quantified for IL-8, IL1-beta, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-alpha, and IL-12p70 using flow cytometry. Samples from paper points were processed for microbiological testing, DNA extraction, and real-time PCR for the detection of HCMV, HSV-1, and HSV-2.; Results: 15 implants and 16 teeth were evaluated for cytokine concentration and presence of periodontal pathogens. IL-6 was statistically greater in implants than in teeth. TNF-α also exhibited a strong trend for higher levels in implants than teeth.; Conclusions: Studies are needed to investigate pro-inflammatory cytokines produced in spite of minimal bacterial accumulation |
