| Abstract | This thesis begins by noting the differences in approach and emphasis in four different anthologies of traditional Chinese literature in English translation. It then moves on to examine ideas of how words get their meanings and what happens to these meanings when you translate words out of one language and into another. Moving into a discussion of the translation of more contemporary Chinese literature brings up additional issues of the interference of preconceived notions of other cultures during the process of translation. In an effort to preserve the uniqueness of one language even as it is translated into another language, this thesis promotes the use of introductions to literary translations. Chapter 5 serves as an example by enriching the reader's understanding of the Chinese poetry of Bei Dao as it appears in English by explaining the historical and aesthetic context out of which it grew. |
