| Abstract | The word on the literal and virtual street is that newspapers are dead, dying or in free-fall and the end of a centuries-old era is upon us. In many ways, the Internet seems a technologically advanced replacement for the daily newspaper. And yet, despite a seemingly clear distinction between the ineffectiveness of one medium and the effectiveness of another, newspapers are still alive. If the "new" medium is already maturing, and has already infiltrated the mainstream, then why aren't newspapers dead? The answer may be that there is still something of intrinsic, unique value that, as yet, cannot be replaced. While other mediums emerge, and the use of those mediums changes the entire landscape, the old-fashioned technology of paper must find its place too. |
