| Abstract | There have been in every age, among all peoples, individuals of that certain temperament to which Mysticism offers an irresistible appeal. Mysticism is a state of thought or feeling which presents itself in many and complex aspects, adapting itself variously to differences in race or in states of civilization, or to objective conditions of geography and climate, and always related more or less closely to the religion of the locality. Under its influence, savagery and ignorance have fallen into wild superstition; culture, arrived at extreme maturity, into symbolism or absolute negation; the astronomer has become astrologist; the chemist, alchemist; the metaphysicianhas framed theories of the unifying principle of the universe; the religious fanatic has sat with introverted eye, motionless in the desert sands: but whether appearing as mystery, allegorism, occultism, quietism or pathological ecstasy or in any other guise whatsoever, Mysticism has always regarded the undefined and unknown relations of Phenomena, seeking to identify the Subjective with the Objective, to comprehend the Eternal inherent in the Temporal. |
