Abstract | One of those forms which civilization evolved in its progress was the Mission system as originated and developed in the effort to compass the civil and religious dominion of Spain in the New World. An inquiry into the genesis and development of this institution; the nature of the problem to which it was applied; the relation existing or conceived to exist between the Catholic Church and the State of Spain; the degree of success achieved; and the ultimate goal, together with an examination into the methods employed in secularization, comprehend in the main the scope of this present thesis. The discussion of these phrases of the subject will require an examination into the relation of Church and State and the establishment of the order of precedence. This question must he traversed in order to determine the final or adequate cause of the mission system, (and) the legality of the legislation and control which the State exercised over the Religious, and the status of the secularization movement. This paper will be concerned with the motives controlling the conquest, the organization and administration of the system adopted, and with pointing out the secret of its failure. It will be shown that secularization was an event necessitated by the inherent limitations of the mission system itself. |
